Active Metabolic Rate (AMR) / VO₂ Max Testing
Active Metabolic Rate (AMR) testing, often referred to as VO₂ max testing, evaluates how your body responds to increasing physical demand. This assessment measures maximal oxygen consumption and provides a detailed view of aerobic capacity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and how efficiently your body produces and uses energy during exercise as intensity rises.
The test is performed using a progressive ramp protocol on an airdyne bike (both arms and legs are in use), with intensity increasing gradually until you reach maximal, sustainable effort. We supervise the protocol which is individualized and can be stopped at any point based on comfort, fatigue, or clinical considerations.
From this data, we are able to determine your true VO₂ max, ventilatory thresholds, personalized heart-rate training zones, metabolic flexibility, and overall cardiorespiratory efficiency. The test also provides insight into recovery patterns and physiologic resilience, offering a meaningful snapshot of long-term health and functional capacity.

General Preparation (All Tests)
Arrive well hydrated and in comfortable clothing
Try to remain calm before testing, as stress or an elevated heart rate can influence results
Before Your Active Metabolic Rate (AMR / VO₂ Max) Test
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before testing
Do not consume a large meal 2–3 hours prior to testing
Limit caffeine for 4 hours before the test
Wear athletic clothing appropriate for cycling
Before Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Test
Avoid high-fat meals within 4 hours of testing
Fast for approximately 4 hours (and no more than 12 hours) before your appointment
No cold plunge or sauna within 4 hours of testing
Water is permitted

Advanced metabolic and VO₂ max testing is available to both members of DeVito Internal Medicine and Pediatrics practice' and individuals who are not current members of the practice.
For patients of the practice, testing may be incorporated into ongoing chronic and preventive care.
For non-members, testing is offered as a standalone assessment with physician interpretation.
All testing is performed using the same clinical-grade equipment, protocols, and medical standards, regardless of membership status.
